Bonseki Restauration

This is a so called Bonseki, a cut stone used for arrangements together with white sand in a black lacquer tray. It is a "furuya-Ishi", the place of origin is Wakayama. The stone was probably found and used during Meiji Period. Although I am studying suiseki for almost 30 years it is the first time I see a bonseki with a lacquered underside. It belongs to a friend in Japan and he asked me to re-lacquer the stone with black urushi. Green urushi was very popular during Meiji-Jidai. I have taken off the original lacquer and applyed a new satin polished black urushi lacquer
